Filsinger's

Alvin Filsinger started farming in the mid 1900s in Ayton, Ontario. Back then, doing things the natural way wasn’t a trend—it was just how it was done. And that’s still how we do it today, sticking to the same methods Alvin used more than 75 years ago. Filsinger’s was one of the first organic farms in Canada. Alvin’s commitment to organic farming never wavered, and his hard work was recognized with a Lifetime Organic Hero Award from Canadian Organic Growers.

Our Story

At Filsinger’s Organic Foods, we believe good food takes time, care, and intention. That’s how our founder, Alvin Filsinger, farmed back in the mid-1900s – and it’s how we still do things today.

Our story began in 1940 on Alvin’s great-uncle’s apple orchard in Burlington, Ontario. As agriculture shifted toward synthetic sprays and chemical fertilizers, Alvin saw the consequences firsthand – damage to the soil, wildlife, and his own health. After witnessing their effects on birds, beneficial insects, and his family’s well-being, Alvin made a bold decision: to farm differently. Naturally. Organically.

He sold the orchard and started fresh in Ayton, Ontario, planting new apple trees and nurturing them without chemicals. It took eight years to see a meaningful harvest – but the flavour, nourishment, and integrity were worth the wait. Filsinger’s became one of Canada’s first organic farms, and Alvin was honoured with the Canadian Organic Growers’ Lifetime Organic Hero Award.

Today, we continue his legacy with the same thoughtful practices – carried on by the Becker and Weber families: Shaun, Cory, and Deb Becker, along with Brandon Weber. All four grew up in the same small community, played on the original farm grounds as children, and share Alvin’s passion for real food and sustainable farming. As we stay true to our roots, we’re also excited to grow beyond them: Filsinger’s is expanding internationally, sharing Canadian-grown values and organic products with families around the world.

We now grow more than 30 varieties of organic, non-GMO apples without herbicides or pesticides. Each apple is picked with care and processed on our family farm using time-honoured methods. We package in glass to preserve purity, protect flavour, and avoid harmful chemicals. There are no shortcuts and no compromises – just wholesome, slow-crafted food you can feel good about serving. At Filsinger’s, we’re proud to grow with heart – the old-fashioned way.
